Hazel J. Meyer

August 31, 1927 – June 29, 2016

Hazel J. Meyer, age 88, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her family on Wednesday, June 29, 2016.

Born in Wilmington, DE on August 31, 1927, Mrs. Meyer was the daughter of the late Joseph and Isabella (Fraser) Booth. She was a graduate of Henry C. Conrad High School. A standout athlete, Mrs. Meyer was the only female left-handed first baseman on the Richardson Park boy’s baseball team in the 1940’s. She worked at the Training Center in New Castle for 26 years prior to her retirement in 2012 and was known to the gym’s patrons as “The Training Center Mom.”

A true matriarch, Mrs. Meyer was devoted to her family. Her children were involved in year-round sports and she faithfully attended each and every event – never missing an opportunity to cheer them on. In her leisure time, Mrs. Meyer enjoyed reading and spending time with her family. Her legacy of love will live on and she will be very dearly missed.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald A. Meyer; and a sister, Gertrude King. Mrs. Meyer is survived by her children, Donna L. Klair (Jan) of Newark, DE, Donald A. Meyer, Jr. (Beth) of Bear, DE and Frank B. Meyer (Dana) of Longview, TX; sister, Jane DiSabatino of Newark, DE; grandchildren, Alexis, Jon, Alex, Sam and Casey; and great grandchildren, Madison and Cora.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday morning, July 5, 2016, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 9 am until 11 am. Interment will follow in the Silverbrook Cemetery, Lancaster Ave. and DuPont Rd., Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 399 Market Street, Ste. 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106.

I truly loved this lady, she was very special! Whenever possible she invited me to “tag along” with the family. And if you did something wrong, she would scold you like you were one of her own. Imagine doing that now. Hazel you will be missed by so many but at least you are reunited with your Donald and those family members waiting for you in heaven. Until I see you again, Love, Mary

Ya all failed to mention that she was a major, key player at Meyer’s Liquors. She was
always there when needed. Once I convinced her to work there and she became comfortable doing it she just blended into the system and she helped me out a lot!! I could always depend on her!!
    Aunt Haz……………………..RIP………………..Love You………..Your Nephew

Mrs. Meyer was one the greatest human beings l’ve ever known in my life.
Its the end of an era. She was the best! Who can fill her shoes? Some of the best times of my life was being at the Meyer household during the 70’s as Mrs. Meyer was so positive and encouraging. My heart goes out to Donna, Dee and Frank. She will be sorely missed.

I used to recall when she used to work at the Training Center. She was a nice old lady. Even though I’m shy, have somewhat of a social anxiety, and tend to steer clear of any communication, she would always try to greet me at the front desk. May she rest in peace.
