Alfonse J. Lugano, Sr. MSGT, Retired

Alfonse J. Lugano, Sr., age 79, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by his family on Wednesday, September 17, 2014.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware on March 6, 1935, Alfonse was the son of the late Alfonse R. Lugano and Pauline E. Massetti Lugano. He attended Salesianum High School when the building was still located at 18th and West Streets and was a member of the graduating class of 1952. Alfonse would make his career with the Air National Guard, retiring at the rank of Master Sergeant.

A true family man, he was happiest in the company of his loved ones and friends and adored traveling with his best friend and wife, Bernadette. Alfonse was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, nephew, grandfather and friend who will be remembered for his kind and giving nature. He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Bernadette E. Winnington Lugano; children, Alfonse J. Lugano, Jr. (Denise) of Newark, Michelle M. Havens of Bear and Ann Marie Noack (Pete) of Newark; sister, Jean Conway (Charles) of New Castle; aunt, Mary Saienni of New Castle; grandchildren, Alfonse J. Lugano III (Stella) of Newark, Dennis C. Lugano of Newark, Lauren E. Havens of Bear and Sarah A. Havens of Bear; great grandson, Louis J. Lugano; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and brothers and sisters in law.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude for the exceptional care provided by Dr. Gregory Masters and the staff of the Helen Graham Cancer Center and also a special thank you to Alfonse’s sister and brother in law, Elizabeth and Jerry Kohl for their endless love and support during this difficult time.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 3 pm until 5 pm on Sunday afternoon, September 21, 2014 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Monday morning, September 22, 2014, at Holy Spirit R.C. Church, 12 Winder Road, Garfield Park, New Castle, DE 19720. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Salesianum High School, 1801 N. Broom St., Wilmington, DE 19802 or to Holy Spirit R.C. Church at the address listed above.

  • I am a cousin of Junie from Mingo Jct., Ohio. We just found out about his passing. I have fond memories of visiting Delawsre. We would usually stop there on our way to Wildwood and leave Dada there for a visit. Junie was always kind, sweet and loving. May he rest in peace and may his memory be eternal. I am Aunt Mary’s daughter Donna.
