Alice D. Gantt - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

Alice D. Gantt

Born May 2, 1925

Alice D. Gantt, age 88, of Avondale, PA, formerly of Hockessin, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 3, 2013.

Born in Wilmington, Delaware on May 2, 1925, Alice was a daughter of the late James Deery and Irene Callaway Deery. In addition to caring for her large family, she worked as a bookkeeper at her husband’s dental practice.

Known fondly by her friends as Last card Alice, she was an outstanding poker player and enjoyed participating in football pools. A woman of strong character and opinion, Alice wrote many letters to the editor on various topics she held dear to her heart. Alice loved to laugh, and her passion for outlandish practical jokes kept her family and friends laughing with her. From simple dribble glass pranks to elaborate costumes, Alice’s whimsy reminded those around her to lighten up and enjoy the simple, sweet, and absurd moments in life.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Ashley Quade, and a sister, Catherine Mayberry. She is survived by her beloved husband of 67 years, World War II veteran, James Claude Gantt; children, Melissa Minka and her husband Stan, Carrie Quade, Mark Gantt and wife Corrine, Stewart Gantt and wife Lorraine, and Scott Gantt; sisters, Clara Davis and June Felder; 10 grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.

Friends may call from 3pm until 5pm on Sunday, November 10, 2013 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE. A committal service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 in the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Willow Tree Hospice, 616 E. Cypress Street, Kennett Square, PA  19348.

  • Hello,
As one of the younger members of the extended family, i don’t have a large amount of memories
of my aunt Alice, but the ones i do have are ones i won’t forget. Many of our visits to the big
house on the hill were unplanned pop-ins and we always were met with open arms and a big
smile from my aunt Alice. I remember sitting around the table in that wildly decorated kitchen
and having good conversation and lots of laughs.
Remember the bathroom wall paper, losing betting tickets from Delaware Park !
Years ago i sent her one of those fake arms that you stick out of the trunk of your car, she got
a big kick out of that.
She loved hearing and telling a good joke. I’ll always remember her laugh, she had a great laugh.
I hope she didn’t suffer in her final weeks and days. She will be missed, but never forgotten.
    Bless my aunt Alice.

My love and thoughts to the whole Gantt family.

    Sean Rowe

I have many fond memories of Alice, including the losing betting tickets wallpaper. Alice always had a great smile and laugh and always had a project going when I would go over to the house. Lots of laughs and smiles. I am certain you and your family have many fond memories.
