Mrs. Margaretta Alice Denn Sheldon Houston Gitney, age 86, of Newark, DE, passed away at home on Thursday, August 11, 2011, surrounded by her loving family.


Mrs. Gitney was born in Wilmington on November 24, 1924, daughter of the late Charles Denn and Edith Funk Denn. A talented bookkeeper throughout her professional career, she was employed with James Julian Construction Company in Wilmington and later with the former Avon Products in Newark.


Mrs. Gitney was a devout Christian and a longtime member of Asbury United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling, especially with her husband on vacations to Ft. Myers Beach, FL.


In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, William E. Houston, Jr., brother, Charles R. Denn, and son-in-law, William E. Broaddus, Jr. She is survived by her beloved husband of 40 years, John J. Gitney, Sr.; children, Sandy McKee (Bob) of Matthews, NC, Stan Sheldon (Karean) of Elkton, MD, Sue Broaddus of Union Hall, VA, and Denise Houston of Huntersville, NC; stepchildren, Ann Gitney of Milford, Sue Linnenbaugh (James III) of Wilmington, Juanita Gitney of West Plains, MO, and John J. Gitney, Jr. of Newark; sister, Oga Evans of New Castle; 19 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.


A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, August 16, 2011, at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 300 E. Basin Road, New Castle, where vistitation will begin at 10:30 am. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.


In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Asbury United Methodist Church, 300 E. Basin Road, New Castle, DE 19720.
