Alvin L. Callahan, age 77, of Newark, DE, passed away suddenly on Friday, May 18, 2018.
Born in Fayetteville, WV on July 11, 1940, he was a son of the late Alvin J. Callahan and Anna F. (Smith) Mansfield.

Alvin retired from the New Castle County Court House as the cafeteria manager. He was an energetic and fearless man who was always willing to try new things, despite his blindness. Active in the blind community, Alvin had respect for everyone and never turned down anyone in need. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies. Alvin liked to bowl, play cards, and was even a former dart champion. Most of all, he was an adoring father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family.

Alvin is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie L. (Pierce) Callahan; children, Brian L. Callahan, Tammy L. Ruhl (Chuck), and Valerie H. Gantner; brothers, Harley H. Spry, Jr. (Barbara) and Brian D. Feldman (Evelyn); sisters, Gloria J. Leon and Doris A. Pine (Duane); sister-in-law, Diane Millar (Richard); and grandchildren, Nicholas and Alyssa Ruhl, Chase Oldham, and Grace Gantner.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Wednesday, May 23, 2017 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will be held at 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Alvin’s memory may be made to the American Heart Association, 200 Continental Drive, Suite 101, Newark, DE 19713.
