Anne Elizabeth Carey Dukes
Anne Elizabeth Carey Dukes, age 87, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 5, 2010, at her assisted living residence in north Wilmington. She had resided at Arden Courts since 2008 after the onset of Alzheimers Disease.
Anne was a native Delawarean, born in Millsboro on June 2, 1922, daughter of the late Elijah Carey and Elizabeth Johnson Carey. A talented homemaker, she also worked as a school secretary with the Colonial School District for thirty years at the former New Castle Middle School.
Anne enjoyed reunions with her college friends, gardening, and maintaining her home in Penn Acres. Previously, she was active in Asbury United Methodist Church in New Castle, in the Penn Acres Civic Association, and with her childrens various activities and social functions. Higher education was a guiding principle in her life and she demonstrated this by ensuring that both her sons graduated from the University of Delaware.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton M. Dukes, Sr., in 1996. She is survived by her two grown sons, Clayton M. Dukes, Jr. of Vienna, VA; and William J. Dukes of New Castle, DE. In her later years, she enjoyed being a grandmother of three to Katherine Katie Dukes of Towson, MD; Matthew Dukes of Vienna, VA; and Tyler Dukes of Stanton, DE. Anne greatly appreciated spending time with each of her grandchildren, taking them on family outings, and preparing family dinners for them. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family. Her passing will always be a sad day for them.
A visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Sunday, April 11, 2010 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A graveside service will be held at 12 Noon on Monday, April 12, 2010 at Millsboro Cemetery, State Street, Millsboro, DE.
