Arthur J. Smith, age 78, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 11, 2015, in the comfort of his own home with his loving family by his side.

Born on May 27, 1937 in Cleveland, Virginia, he was the son of the late Claude Wilson Smith and Erma Presley Smith. In his earlier years, he attended Cleveland High School in Virginia. In November of 1960, Joe moved to Delaware where he made his living at Gore from 1960 “ 1968 and at the Chrysler plant in Newark from 1968 – 1995.

Joe lived for his family, always putting them before himself. He lived a selfless life where he took pride in watching his children and grandchildren grow. Family was the cornerstone and guiding principle for Joe’s life, which made him rich with the love all around him. Spending quality time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren gave him the most enjoyment. He loved family gatherings, from small BBQ’s to family reunions, where he enjoyed watching the children laugh and play and visiting with family. In his leisure time, he loved camping at Cherrystone Campground with family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Daniel Danny Smith, Sr. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Kaye Smith; daughter, Crystal Duncan and her husband, Randale; son, David Smith and his wife, Alene; stepson Glen Miller; stepdaughter, Tanya Wilson and her husband, Dave; two sisters, Betty Jane Leonard and her husband, Bob and Debra Musick and her husband, Wayne; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; and many dear friends.

A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, August 19, 2015 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where friends may visit with Joe’s family from 11 am until 12 Noon. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE 19720.

Memorial contributions may be made in Joe’s memory to Faith Lutheran Church, 2265 Red Lion Road, Bear, DE 19702 or to VITAS Community Connection, 100 Commerce Drive, Suite 302, Newark, DE 19713.
