Arthur R. Toulson, age 78, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family on Wednesday morning, January 14, 2015.

Born in Salem, NJ on July 19, 1936, Art was the son of the late Robert Toulson and Ethel Mae Hadley Toulson. After graduating from Salem High School in 1955, he proudly served his country as a member of the US Army until being honorably discharged in 1959. Art made his career as a pipefitter with the DuPont Company for 34 years, first at Rupano, where he served his apprenticeship, then Plant 1 and lastly at the company’s Edgemoor plant from 1960 until his retirement in 1994.

Active in his community, he was a member of the DuPont Vets, DuPont Pensioners Association, New Castle Moose Lodge #1578, Elkton Elks Lodge #2618, Wilmington Eagles #74, St. Anthony’s Club in New Castle, St. Gabes of New Castle and American Legion Post #30. Art was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend to many and will be dearly missed by all.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Ruth Van Haaften. Art is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Janet A. (Ellis) Toulson; daughters, Barbara Toulson of St. Louis, MO and Bette Jo Yow (Serge) of New Castle, DE; son, Bruce R. Toulson of Woodstown, NJ; stepdaughter, Vicki Scott of New Castle, DE; 3 grandchildren, Michelle Woy (Shawn) of Taylor, MS, Melissa Piening (Kevin) of Belleville, IL and Johnny Gangemi of NJ; 3 great grandchildren, Leah and Anna Woy and Grayson Piening; 2 sisters-in-law, Karen Ellis (John) of Bear, DE and Sandra Cloutier (Robert) of Newark, DE; several nieces and nephews; and many good friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm on Monday evening, January 19, 2015 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday morning, January 20, 2015, at the funeral home. Interment will be held privately in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Joseph B Stahl Memorial Post No. 30 Building Fund, 3 East Jackson Avenue, New Castle, DE 19720.

  • Dear Jan and family, I can not say how sorry I am to get this news. Please accept my deepest condolences. I think of Uncle Bob when I see Arthur’s photo and remember laughing and joking when we were all together as family. And I am grateful to Arthur and all of you for your loving care of Aunt Ruth when she was alone. I also thank God for letting me get to know Arthur, even for small bits and moments though-out his life. He seemed shyer than his dad but was just as much fun.     Sorry to learn of Art’s passing. I spent a few day’s with him when Art, Aunt Ruth & Uncle Bob lived near the water in an apartment across from the local amusement park. Art took me crabbing & to the amusement park where he showed me all the fun things to do. I always appreciated the time & care that you both gave to Aunt Ruth in her last years! Sorry that I never met you but I did remember Art plus you & Art & the grandchildren in your Christmas photos. Thinking of you often, Cousin John
