Born September 20, 1926

Beatrice Elizabeth Proffitt, known fondly as “Bea,” age 89, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 8, 2016.

Born in Simpson, LA on September 20, 1926, Mrs. Proffitt was the daughter of the late Stephen and Bessie (Long) Stephens. In addition to raising her family, she made her career as a retail sales clerk, retiring after many years of dedicated service.

Active in her community, Mrs. Proffitt gave of her time as a volunteer with Christiana Care Health Services and also as a poll watcher during election season. She enjoyed attending classes at the University of Delaware’s Lifelong Learning Center and developed a deep appreciation of foreign cultures while travelling all over the world. An avid flower gardener, Mrs. Proffitt adored tending to her yard, floral arranging and competing in local shows. She will be remembered by family and friends as being meticulous in all she did and for her willingness to always lend a helping hand to anyone in need.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Proffitt was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Taze Howard Proffitt, Sr. She is survived by her sons, Taze H. Proffitt, Jr. and Ronald C. Proffitt (Linda); brother, Elbert Stephens; 5 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Thursday morning, August 18, 2016, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a visitation will be held from 10 am until 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Proffitt’s memory may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the American Cancer Society 92 Read’s Way, Ste. 205 New Castle, DE 19720.

  • I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your dear loved one. I did not know Beatrice personally but I understand how difficult a time like this can be. May memories of her and our Heavenly Father, who is the God of all comfort, give you the strength and comfort that you need (2 Corinthians 1:3). Our Heavenly Father understands your pain because he too has experienced the death of his beloved Son, Jesus Christ.
