Benjamin Merrill Sterner

Born:
Died: 11/13/2010

On November 13, 2010, our beloved father, brother, uncle, and friend, Benjamin Merrill Sterner, went home to be with our Heavenly Father.

Ben was born in Chester, PA, on November 22, 1928, son of the late Benjamin H. and Margaret N. Sterner. The family moved to Delaware where he attended Alfred I. DuPont School. Ben went on to work for several local auto slipcover and glass companies and later owned and operated Claymont Glass Company. He also served in the Navy Reserves and worked on a mine sweeper along the East Coast.

After relocating to Florida, he established a Mr. Fix-it Company, which specialized in building and replacing Florida screen and glass rooms. Ben was a longtime member of the Masonic Order and a member of Lake Como United Methodist Church in Georgetown, FL.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gloria Bennett Sterner, who passed away on January 3, 2000. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Butzen of Portland, OR; two grandchildren and a great grandchild; daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Brown of Camden; brother, Thomas D. Sterner of Wilmington; sisters, Shirley Stephens (Dick) of Hockessin and Rae Sterner Moore of Port St. Lucie, FL; several nieces and nephews whom he adored; and his dear friend, Kay Hickman.

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, July 8, 2011, in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where visitation will begin at 1 pm. Interment will follow in the adjoining memorial park.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Haven Hospices Roberts Care Center, 4200 NW 90th Boulevard, Gainesville, FL 32606 or to any animal rescue center of the donors choice.
