Benjamin Spencer Tharp

Born July 14, 1935

Benjamin Spencer Tharp, age 80, of Delaware City, DE, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 30, 2016.

A lifelong Delawarean, Mr. Tharp was born in Middletown on July 14, 1935, and was a son of the late Spencer D. and Margaret J. (Clough) Tharp. He made his career as a heavy equipment operator and truck driver for many years and worked for several area companies including Boyer and Cruchley, Seaways and Finnegan Construction.

Mr. Tharp was a farming enthusiast and raised livestock for many years on his property. Those who knew him understood his cows were considered family pets and he lovingly cared for each of them. An avid baseball fan, Mr. Tharp looked forward to cheering on the Philadelphia Phillies every season. He adored his family and looked forward to spending time with his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Tharp was preceded in death by his siblings, Levi and Nanette and a son, Benjamin Spencer Tharp, Jr. He is survived by his daughter, Marge Turner of Perryville, MD; sons, Tim Tharp and Joe Tharp, both of Delaware City, DE; and grandsons, Benjamin and Joseph, Jr.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday morning, June 4, 2016, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 214 Clinton Street, Delaware City, DE, where a visitation will be held from 10 am until 11 am. Interment will follow in Hickory Grove Cemetery, Port Penn Road, Port Penn, DE.
