Bette Allison Todd

October 31, 1924 - January 4, 2015

Bette Allison Todd, age 90, of Newark, DE, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother and dear friend to many, died at home on Sunday, January 4, 2015.

A native of Asheville, NC, Bette was born in 1924 and was the daughter of the late Harly and Lillian Allison. She attended Mars Hill College and completed her undergraduate studies at Berea College in Kentucky. Subsequently, she went on to receive her master’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Bette moved to Delaware in 1956 to accept a teaching position at the University of Delaware. She continued in full and part-time positions instructing classes on home economics, apparel design and fashion until 1985, when she retired to spend more time with family.

She was an active member of the Newark United Methodist Church for almost 50 years, while maintaining contact with friends and relatives from her hometown church, Bethel United Methodist. In addition to her love of the church, she was an active member of United Methodist Women, U of D faculty affairs, and a member of the Silverbrook and Southridge Community Associations. A devoted fan of U of D football, she faithfully attended games for many years and continued to follow the team via radio into her late 80’s. Bette had life-long passion for gardening, raising vegetables and flowers which stemmed from her farming roots.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 57 years, John David Todd; son and daughter-in-law, David and Kathy Todd of Falls Church, VA; grandchildren, Elizabeth and John; and nephew, Roger Corbin of New Braunfels, TX.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday morning, January 24, 2015, at the Newark United Methodist Church, 69 E. Main Street, Newark, Delaware 19711. Interment will be held privately in Cherry Hill Cemetery, Elkton, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Newark United Methodist Church at the address listed above.
