Betty Jane Stiltz

Born December 24, 1923

Betty Jane Stiltz, age 89, of Towson, MD, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 14, 2013, at the Gilchrist Hospice Center.
Born in Wilmington, Delaware, on December 24, 1923, Betty was the daughter of the late Thomas and Helen Loveless. She spent most of her life in Newark, DE and attended Newark High School. Betty excelled as a student athlete and was head of the cheerleading squad. She met the love of her life, Acky, while attending her alma mater, and the two were married after their graduation in 1941. Soon after, Acky was deployed to Europe and Africa for 3 years. After he returned from war, the couple had their son, Tom.
Betty began her career as a clerk/typist working for Ed Long, who was the Secretary-Treasurer of the City of Newark at the time. Upon Ed’s retirement in 1961, Betty was sworn in to replace him, and served in that position for the next 23 years. A 1973 article in the Newark Post best described Betty’s work ethic: Femininsts would do well to cite (Betty Stiltz) as an example of what a woman can do in an important post – if given the opportunity. (She) brought the kind of efficiency and energy men like to think of as ˜their’ forte. But she also adds that distinctively feminine graciousness and kindness that men too often lack.
In 1984, she and Acky retired, he after 38 years with Bell Telephone. They spent summers at their vacation home in Ocean City, MD. Both were avid fisherman, but it was Betty who laid claim to catching one of the largest flounders ever recorded in MD, weighing in at 15 ½ pounds. She relocated to Towson in 2006 to be near her son and his family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alfred Acky Stiltz, who passed away in 1994. She is survived by son, Thomas Stiltz and wife, Sheri; granddaughters, Jennifer Bohl and Julie Stiltz; and great granddaughter, Madison Jane Bohl.
A memorial service will be held at 3 pm on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE, where friends may call from 2 pm until 3 pm. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gilchrist Hospice Center, 555 Towsontown Boulevard West, Towson, MD 21204.

  • My deepest sympathies to the family for your loss. I would like to offer words of comfort that have helped me in times of sorrow. God lovingly promises “that there is going to be a resurrection…”-Acts 24:15 and at that time “he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.”-Revelation 21:4 Until that time may you find comfort and assurance in God’s word the Bible and the sustaining power of prayer.

  • Dear Tom
