Betty Jean Gray

July 3, 1945 - February 2, 2016

Betty Jean Gray, age 70, of Newark, DE passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 surrounded by loving family.

Born in Elkton, Maryland on July 3, 1945, she was a daughter of the late Doris Wyre.

Betty was an avid tennis player for many years. She also enjoyed gardening and was a member of the mermaids of the Bear, Y. Family was always her priority and her grandchildren were her pride and joy.

Betty is survived by her husband, James T. Gray, of Newark; daughters, Lori Gray and her husband David Trefsger, of Ocean View, Jennifer Carl and her husband Jeremy of Middletown; brothers, Ronald Isaacs and his wife Mary Ann, Rick Wyre and his wife Kim; grandson, Willem Carl; and granddaughter, Cameron Carl.

A memorial service will be held on Monday morning February 8, 2016 at twelve noon, where a visitation will be held from 10:30-noon at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes and crematory, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE, 19711.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society at 100 W 10th St #209, Wilmington, DE 19801 or Delaware Hospice 16 Polly Drummond Shopping Center, Newark, DE 19711.

    So sorry to hear of Betty’s passing. She was such a genuinely nice and sweet person. Her Mom and my Dad were cousins, so I guess we were cousins too. Good memories of growing up just down the street from Betty, we had a lot of fun. She fought a long and hard battle, and now she can rest. God will take care of her now. Peace and comfort in the coming days for you and your family.

  • Although I knew she was ill, Betty’s sparkling, joyous demeanor made it seem as though she was not ill at all. She was always Betty, the warm & affectionate friend, quick to smile and share her enthusiasm for life, her beautiful eyes twinkling! She will always have a special place in my heart.

She was a great person, friend and a wonderful tennis player. I loved the tennis luncheons at your beautiful home, gardens and pool. I’m glad I got to spent time with her and to call her my friend.
