Billy J. Cox

Billy J. Cox, age 89, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 13, 2017.
Born in Birmingham, Alabama on June 2, 1928, Bill was the son of the late Benjamin F. and Amelia (Douglass) Cox. After graduating from Auburn University, Bill proudly served his country as an officer in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. A 40+ year employee of the DuPont Company, Bill started his career as an electrical engineer, advanced into management, and retired from the Salary and Compensation Division.
He was a longtime member of the Newark United Methodist Church serving on numerous committees including Pastor/Parish Relations and the Finance Committee. He was a devoted usher and used his photography skills to assist with videotaping special ceremonies. Mechanically inclined, Bill enjoyed repairing anything that needed attention, but especially liked working on automobiles and home improvement projects. He was a talented marksman, who appreciated the challenge of precision shooting and enjoyed constructing and rebuilding firearms. In his leisure time, Bill looked forward to traveling, dining out, and spending time with family. Above all else, he was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and dear friend to many. He will be lovingly missed.
Bill is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret (Reid) Cox; children, W. Reid Cox (Nancy) of Leesburg, VA, Kathryn C. Madey (Ron) of Newtown Square, PA, and Susan C. Carr (Thomas) of Wilmington; and grandchildren, Laura Cox, Kara and Julia Madey, and Madelyn and Claudia Carr.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:30 am until 11:30 am on Friday morning, June 30, 2017, at the Newark United Methodist Church, 69 E. Main Street, Newark, DE 19711, where a funeral service will begin at 11:30 am. Interment will follow in Head of Christiana Cemetery, Nottingham Road, Newark, DE.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bill’s memory may be made to the Newark United Methodist Church, at the address listed above.

I was so sorry to read of the passing of your father last week. Although I did not know him well, he shared a love of cars, particularly his 1963 Mercedes 160, and a son who became a great friend. I the best to you and Nancy during this time of sorrow.

Dear Margaret and family,
I was so very sad to hear about Bill passing. I have loved the time we always got to spend together when you both would come down to visit with Helen. I don’t believe I have ever met a nicer or kinder man than Bill. He was always so interesting to talk with and I loved listening to all his stories. I know you all will miss him so very much and we will also. I pray God comforts each and every one of you during this time. I know his memory will carry on in each of you also so continue to share his stories and all the wonderful times and he will always be close to you.

David and I join in sending our condolences. We were neighbors for only a few years, but in that time we got a sense of of Bill. He always came out of the house when I was gardening. We had lovely conversations. My life is made better by having known him.
