Byron T. Hawks, Sr.
Mr. Byron Taylor Hawks, Sr., age 80, of Newark, DE, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2011, at the VA Medical Center Hospice Unit surrounded by his beloved family.
Born in Oxford, PA, on September 28, 1930, Mr. Hawks was the son of the late Reeves V. Hawks and Sarah E. Wilson Hawks. He proudly served his country in the US Army for two years during the Korean War. In civilian life, he made his career as a professional truck driver, retiring in 1996 from Delaware Express in Elkton, MD, after 29 years of service. He was a devout Christian and a longtime member of Zion United Methodist Church in North East, MD.
In his leisure hours, Mr. Hawks greatly enjoyed traveling, camping, bowling, and taking trips to the beach in Cape May, NJ.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Emma Way Hawks; children, Byron T. Hawks, Jr. (Joan) of Senatobia, MS, Timothy W. Hawks (Ellie) of Folcroft, PA, Becky Brown (Wayne) of Newark, DE, and Beth A. Pagan (Rafael) of Newark, DE; sister, Roberta Rang of Houston, TX; 9 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Thursday, March 17th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE. A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Friday, March 18th, at the funeral home, where a second visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.
