Carolyn J. Chalmers
Miss Carolyn J. Chalmers, age 96, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at Heartland Hospice House in Pike Creek after a brief illness.
Miss Chalmers, a lifelong resident of Newark, was born on June 6, 1915, daughter of the late David Chalmers and Mary Stewart Chalmers. A 1933 graduate of Newark High School, she made her career with the University of Delawares Office of Alumni Relations where she retired in 1977 after 27 years of service.
Miss Chalmers was a charter member of the Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Ladies Auxiliary and had been active with the former Womens Auxiliary of the Stockley Center of Delaware. She also belonged to the Newark Senior Center for many years and was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Newark. She was an avid sports fan and faithfully attended University of Delaware home games for over 70 years; she also greatly enjoyed watching favorite televised sporting events.
A talented and generous knitter, Miss Chalmers was well known for the countless baby sweaters she handmade over the years as gifts for family and friends, as well as for senior center and church bazaars.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters, including Ann Chalmers, with whom she lived for over 90 years. She is survived by her nephew, Victor Chalmers (Victoria), and nieces, Patricia Pickett (Gordon), Mary Jeanette Monihan, Diane Roemer (Ed), and Carolyn Burris (Howard); and many great nieces and great nephews.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the wonderful nurses and staff of Heartland Hospice House for their many kindnesses to Miss Chalmers during her illness.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, August 1, 2011, at the First Presbyterian Church, 292 W. Main Street, Newark, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will follow in Head of Christiana Cemetery, Nottingham Road, Newark.
