Carolyn S. Shortess

Carolyn S. Shortess, age 86, of Silver Spring, MD and a former resident of Apple Road in Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 7, 2014.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland on May 9, 1928, Mrs. Shortess was a daughter of the late Rev. Russell W. Sapp and Louise Owens Sapp. She was a devoted and talented homemaker who dedicated her life to caring for her family.
Mrs. Shortess was a longtime member of the Newark United Methodist Church. Active in her community, she gave of her time and talents as a volunteer with both the Blood Bank of Delmarva and the League of Women Voters. Additionally, she was a member of the Newark Century Club, the Newark Senior Center and the United Methodist Women at Newark U.M.C. A lifelong learner, Mrs. Shortess was very involved with the English Language Institute at the University of Delaware and provided a home for students from Russia, China, Korea, Germany, Nicaragua and Columbia. In her leisure time, she enjoyed a good game of bridge with friends. Mrs. Shortess was an adoring wife, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother who will be dearly missed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard T. Shortess who passed away in 1992 and her twin sister, Louise S. Hawkins. She is survived by her children, Richard T. Shortess, Jr. (Karen) of Glyndon, MD, Brian R. Shortess (Bev) of Spotsylvania, VA and Anne S. Hauprich (Don) of Burtonsville, MD; sister, Jacqueline S. Skarbek of Ellicott City, MD; 5 grandchildren, Matthew T. Shortess, Carly J. Shortess, Kelly H. Fainter (Justin), Katrina L. Hauprich and Carolyn A. Shortess; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm on Friday evening, August 15, 2014 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. A graveside service will be held at 10 am on Saturday morning, August 16, 2014 in the Head of Christiana Cemetery, Nottingham Road, Newark. A memorial service will follow at 11 am in the chapel of the Newark United Methodist Church, 69 E. Main St., Newark.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to McDaniel College, c/o the Carolyn S. Shortess Scholarship Fund, 2 College Hill, Westminster, MD 21157.
