Charles J. Thomas
Mr. Charles J. Thomas, age 61, of New Castle, DE, passed away suddenly on Sunday, June 30, 2013, at his home.
A native Delawarean, Mr. Thomas was born in Wilmington on November 23, 1951, son of the late Eugene Thomas and Grace Salevan Thomas. He graduated from William Penn High School in 1972 and would go on to make his career in the maintenance department of Sears-Roebuck in Stanton, where he retired after 35 years of service.
Mr. Thomas was admired as an introspective and intellectually-gifted person who delighted in the study of a wide variety of subjects. An avid reader, he had a collection of thousands of books, many of which dealt with architecture and the sciences. He was fascinated by the world around him and especially enjoyed the beauty of natural landscapes. He was a gifted carpenter, as well, and a skilled woodworker.
He will be fondly remembered as a kind and compassionate person who could always be counted upon to help anyone in need. He was also devoted to animals throughout his life, particularly his beloved pet cats.
Mr. Thomas will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his sister, Carolyn Thomas, and his brother, Robert Thomas, both of New Castle.
A memorial service will be held at 3 pm on Monday, July 8th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Thomas may be made to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), 455 Stanton-Christiana Road, Newark, DE 19713.
