Charles M. Ryan, age 79, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by his family on Friday, May 2, 2014.

Born in Shenandoah, PA on October 20, 1934, Mr. Ryan was a son of the late Charles Ryan and Theresa Whitaker Ryan. He worked as a grocery clerk for Acme, retiring after many years of dedicated employment.

An avid sports fan, Mr. Ryan enjoyed cheering on the Phillies and Eagles each season. When his sons were younger, he gave of his time and talents as a youth baseball and football coach. Mr. Ryan liked trying his luck at the casinos, especially at Dover Downs and Harrington. Above all else, he was a devoted and loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and friend who will be dearly missed.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Ryan and daughter, Geraldine Ryan. Mr. Ryan is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Lois A. (McCauley) Ryan; children, Barb Watson (Thomas), Patrick Ryan (Carol) and Charles J. Ryan; daughter-in-law, Doris Ryan; brother, Jack Hanna (Barb); sister, Geraldine McDonald (Larry); 6 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday morning, May 7, 2014, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a visitation will be held from 9 am until 11 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Ryan’s name may be made to Seasons Hospice of Delaware, 220 Continental Drive, Ste. 101, Newark, DE 19713.

  • Uncle Charlie was the happiest man in the world. He always had a smile on his face and that is what I will remember most about him as well as what a loving man he was to everyone he met. I wish I could be there with the family at this time of sorrow. My deepest sympathy to all. I hold you in my arms and in my prayers. Much love from California.

  • Thank you Karen. We know that you were with us in spirit, even if you couldn’t be there in person. It is what Dad wanted, he did not want to live that way. He was calm and peaceful at the end.
