Charlotte N. (McLaughlin) Witt - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

Charlotte N. (McLaughlin) Witt

September 6, 1941 - October 5, 2017

Charlotte N. (McLaughlin) Witt, age 76, of New Castle, DE, who was born on September 6, 1941 to the late Bernard and Mildred (Wilfong) McLaughlin, passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2017.

A Delaware native and long time resident of Dobbinsville, who was loved by all and well known for her Big candy bars at Halloween and elaborate Christmas light display. Charlotte’s love for Christmas shined as bright as Rudolph’s nose.

Charlotte experienced many careers during her lifetime, including a munitions factory making hand grenades, assembling food slicers at Fast Line, and welding flatbed trains for Delpro. Lastly, she worked in food service next to her life long friend, Nadine, for the Colonial School District at Geroge Read and New Castle Middle School, retiring after many years of dedicated service.

Charlotte was the Grandmom, Mommom or Granny to many in the Dobbinsville community, Midway Girls Softball, Premier Volleyball of Delaware and A.I. duPont High School, where she spent countless hours feeding people at the concession stand. She loved to travel near and far to sporting events to cheer on her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Charoltte had a passion for dancing at an early age. Many would seek her out for a dance lesson or just to watch her jitterbug with her brother Bill on the dance floor. Most of all, she cherished every dance with her husband, Fred.

Charlotte had a contagious smile, laugh and love that was very powerful and was felt by everyone she met. She will be remembered as being a spunky, kind hearted, stubborn and amazingly special woman who always thought of others first and also made the best potato salad.

Charlotte was eternally grateful to Pat (Taxi Driver), Niki for being her interpretor, Randy for everything he has done for her, to Silverstein 8 nurses at UPenn for the exceptional care after her open heart surgery, the 2E CVCCC Unit at Christiana Care, Chelsea, Michael, Jenna, Monica, Jaime, and Stephanie, for their compassion and knowledge that was beyond compare.

In addition to her parents, Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, Frederick Witt; her brothers, Bernard A., James J., and William E. McLaughlin; sister, Veronica J. Anderson; and granddaughter, Courtney. She is survived by her children, Sandra Elliott (Robert), Harry Witt (Rosemarie), Frederick Witt, Sr. (Krissann), Noreen Witt, and Kimberly Stevens (Randy); grandchildren, Danielle Witt, Christopher, Travis (whom she raised), Corby Burton, Jerry, Shane, Freddy, Brandon and Sydney Stevens; great grandchildren, Katlyn, McKenzie, Matthew, Regan, Rebecca, Colton, Michaela, Jordan, Travis (Nate), Tyler, and Ryleigh. A host of nephews and nieces, especially Charlotte Hamilton (Joe), Trina McLaughlin and Niki Morris (Kelley) who were more like her daughters and shared a special bond.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Monday evening, October 16, 2017, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A second visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm on Tuesday morning, October 17, 2017, where a funeral service will follow at 12:30 pm. Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Charlotte’s name may be made to Faithful Friends, 12 Germay Drive, Wilmington, DE 19804; PENN Medicine, https://www.pennmedicine.org/giving/ways-to-give/gifts-in-memory-or-honor; or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
