Claire Campbell

Born February 27, 1923

 

Clara Gordon Campbell, age 90, of Newark, DE passed away at home on Sunday, October 27, 2013.

Mrs. Campbell was born on February 27, 1923 in Belmar, New Jersey the daughter of the late William Gordon and Beatrice Delaney Gordon. After graduating from Asbury High School in New Jersey, she married her childhood sweet heart, Robert Bud Campbell. In 1943, she followed her husband to California where he was in the service during World War II and she was the only woman working in the motor pool at Ontario Army Air Field.

Mrs. Campbell returned to Avon-by-the-Sea, New Jersey after the war where she and her husband raised two daughters and an assortment of cats and dogs. Their house was a gathering place in the neighborhood and was often full of happy children and pets. After her grandchildren were born, she spent many happy hours taking care of them.
While living in Avon, Mrs. Campbell was active in the Avon Methodist Church, serving as the church secretary. She also worked in the town borough office and for the Board of Elections. Mrs. Campbell loved living at the Jersey Shore and enjoyed spending time at the beach.
In 1992, she moved with her husband to Newark, Delaware where she enjoyed reading and going to the theater. She led an active life and participated in water aerobics well into her 80s. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband and family friends. During retirement, she traveled to London, Alaska, the Canadian and American Rockies, Nova Scotia, the Caribbean and the American Southwest. Continuing her love of the water, she also enjoyed numerous cruises as well as family vacations to the Jersey Shore, the Outer Banks and house boating on Lake Powell.
Mrs. Campbell is survived by 2 daughters and a granddaughter, Noreen Campbell of Newark, Delaware, Lynn Campbell Harshbarger and her husband Dan of Apollo Beach, Florida and, Karole Langlois of San Francisco, California. Mrs. Campbell was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Robert D. Campbell and her grandson, Mark Langlois.
A memorial service will be held at 12 Noon on Friday, November 1, 2013 at the Spicer-Millikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where friends may call from 11 am until 12 Noon. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Friends of the Newark Free Library, 750 Library Avenue, Newark, DE 19711.
