Claude E. Ayers, age 89, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 11, 2015.

Born in Princeton, WV on August 12, 1925, Mr. Ayers was a son of the late Clarence R. Ayers and Lula B. (Smith) Ayers. He proudly served his country as a member of the US Army from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1945. A member of Teamsters Local No. 326, Mr. Ayers made his career as a professional truck driver.

An avid bluegrass music fan, he enjoyed visiting bluegrass festivals throughout the area. Mr. Ayers liked working in his backyard and loved good Southern cooking. Above all else, he was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather who adored spending time with his family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Mr. Ayers is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Shelby (Helmandollar) Ayers; children, Sheila M. Ayers of Middletown and Steven C. Ayers (Christine) of New Castle; 1 granddaughter, Sheena; 2 great grandchildren, Makailee and Sianna; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Friday morning, March 20, 2015, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 9 am until 10 am. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 92 Read’s Way, Ste. 205, New Castle, DE 19720.

HE LIVED IN new castle De, and we lived in va , but when ever you seem Claude ,he never changed , he was always the same , he had a good sence of hummar , always kiding around and full of life . he never meet a strange ,, i loved him so much . i pray i’ll get to see him in heaven . he was a wonderful man i’ll keep him in my heart for ever . you know there are people who you meet in life you just love them when you first meet them , he was one of those people , you could’t help but love , my heart goes out to hes kids , and wife , Junior and i are praying for all of you . its the road a head you are going to need each other so please be there for your mom , she will need you more now than she ever has , uunderstand her for she has been with Claude longer than you have ,i’m going to leave this poem with you take a cup of kindness mix it well with love ,add a lot of patience and faith in God above , Sprinkle very generously with joy and thanks and cheer — and you will have lots of Angel food to feast on all the year
