Dennis R. Mertz, Ph.D.

Dr. Dennis R. Mertz, age 63, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 12, 2016.

Born in Trexlertown, PA on July 3, 1953, Dr. Mertz was a son of the late Charles and Minerva (Merkel) Mertz. He served as a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Delaware for twenty-five years. He was a member of the United Church of Christ.

Dr. Mertz is survived by his wife, Madelyn J. (Jablon) Mertz; and brother, Richard Mertz and sister-in-law, Ann of Allentown, PA.

A graveside service and interment were held privately in the Epworth United Methodist Church Cemetery, Rehoboth Beach, DE. A memorial service will be held at the University of Delaware in the near future.

    Dr. Mertz made going to class fun. The love of his subject was evident in every lecture. A professor who enjoyed teaching and interacting with his students.

    As a student in university of Delaware, I met Dr. Mertz for the first time when he arrived in the class room. His excitement in the field of civil engineering was contagious. I remember I looked forward to attend his lectures. Soft spoken and a smile that never faded has etched in my memory for all these years.
    Thank you Dr. Mertz for dedicating so much to humanity.
    You will be missed.
