Dexter Worden

Born March 4, 1935

Dexter Worden, age 78, of Newark, DE, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2013.
Born in Tientsin, China, Mr. Worden was the son of the late Warren Lester Worden and Mildred Boericke Worden. He honorably served his country in the US Army. Mr. Worden worked as a lab technician at the DuPont Experimental Station for a number of years prior to accepting a position as a research associate with W.L. Gore. He retired after 23 years of dedicated service there.
An avid musician, Mr. Worden loved playing the guitar. In his leisure time, he enjoyed reading, gardening, and volunteering for Meals on Wheels. He especially liked playing tennis and table tennis. Above all else, he was a devoted husband, father, brother, and grandfather who adored spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Gregory Worden; sisters, Ethelwyn and Gretchen Worden; and a grandson, Daniel Worden. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shirley Jean Wood Worden; son, Stephen W. Worden and wife Valerie of Newark, DE; daughter-in-law, Lynn Worden of Avondale, PA; sister Jen Worden of Albuquerque, NM; grandchildren, Benjamin, Smith, and Charlie Worden, Martha Worden Dively and husband William, and Rosemary and Krista Worden; and great grandchildren, Jenna Worden, Alivia Eder, and Nixon Dively; and his ˜adopted’ granddaughter Stephanie Wilson.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, November 2, 2013, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where friends may call from 10:30 am until 11:30 am. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Newark Senior Center Meal on Wheels, 200 White Chapel Drive, Newark, DE 19713 or to Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Center, 2nd Floor, Newark, DE 19711.

    Dexter was a friend to all. In all the time I knew him I never heard him say a bad word about anyone, or anyone say a bad word about him. Both our tennis league and table tennis league will miss him greatly.
