Dolores Harrington

Born September 28, 1928

Dolores Harrington, age 87, of Newark, DE and formerly of Pike Creek Valley, DE, passed away peacefully, while surrounded by her family on Thursday, December 31, 2015.

Born in Philadelphia, PA on September 28, 1928, Dolores was the daughter of the late Francis P. and Margaret (Pello) Jarvis and was raised in the northeast section of the city. Her mother worked outside of the home as a beautician, so the family had a live-in nanny from Ireland for many years. Dolores graduated from Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls. While vacationing at the Jersey Shore, she met her future husband, John J. Harrington. Dolores worked for Macy’s in the Philadelphia area as a salesgirl until her marriage in 1952. The couple settled in Wilmington and eventually moved to Newark to begin their family.

Dolores worked part-time at the former U of D Bookstore for more than 25 years. She was an avid shopper and was often spotted at the mall. Raising her family in the Catholic faith, Dolores attended mass daily at St. John’s-Holy Angels and later at Holy Family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John, who died in 1985 and her daughter, Nancy A. Carr, who died in 1990. Dolores is survived by her children, Michael J. Harrington (Sandi), Patricia Tranum (Ronnie) and John Jack Harrington; and brother, Kenneth Jarvis. She was Nana to 7 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandson.

A memorial service will be held at 7 pm on Thursday evening, January 14, 2016, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 8 pm. Interment will be held privately in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington, DE.
