Donald A. Jones

Mr. Donald A. Jones, known fondly as Duck, age 67, of Newark, DE, passed away on Thursday, May 5, 2011, at Christiana Hospital.

Don was born in Utica, NY, on October 23, 1943, son of the late Arthur W. Jones and Leila Sterling Jones. As a young man, he proudly served his country for four years in the US Air Force. In civilian life, he chose computer technology as his profession, working as a computer analyst for the DuPont Company for 30 years. He later accepted a position with Computer Sciences Corporation where he retired. Computers were always a passion for him and he never tired of exploring their potential and expanding his knowledge.

From his youth, Don was also fascinated by automobiles and their history, particularly Corvettes. He was very proud to have owned several Corvettes throughout his life and was a fan of NASCAR racing as well.

In his leisure hours, he enjoyed playing poker at the Newark Senior Center and taking trips to Delaware Park. In earlier years, he often played in a Bunco group with friends and was a member of the Delaware Caravans.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his brother, Richard S. Jones, and a son, Timothy L. Hamm. He is survived by his beloved wife of 32 years, Barbara J. Smeltzer Jones; children, Vickie L. Jackson (Jack) of Wilmington, Melissa A. Rabon (Craig) of Spartanburg, SC, Jennifer K. Marsh (David) of Bear, and Rick Jones (Stacie) of Wilmington; sister, Carol J. Monahan of Mountain View, CA; lifelong friend, Jerry Orsaeo of New Hartford, NY; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 5:30 pm on Monday, May 9, 2011, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, where visitation will begin at 4 pm. A committal service will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Don may be made to the Blood Bank of Delmarva, 100 Hygeia Drive, Newark, DE 19713 (800/548-4009).
