Donald D. Shores, age 91, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at home, while surrounded by his loving family, on Thursday, January 5, 2017.

Born in Sparta, NC on August 11, 1925, Donald was the son of the late Donald and Verdie (Phipps) Shores. He bravely served his country during WWII as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force. A career employee of Chrysler, Donald made his career as a chief inspector at the company’s Newark plant, retiring after many years of dedicated service. He was the former owner of Rambleton Discount Liquors in New Castle and also worked at Three Little Bakers Country Club as a course marshal.

He was a longtime member of St. John’s Lodge No 2, A.F. & A.M., New Castle, Elks Lodge No. 2281, New Castle and the New Castle Moose Family Center Lodge No. 1578. Active in his community, Donald served as a mentor to the students at West Park Place Elementary School. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed hitting the links whenever possible. Above all else, Donald was a devoted family man who adored spending time with his loved ones, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joyce (Haussler) Shores; and sister, Mildred. Donald is survived by his children, Darleene Buckner (Jerry) of Memphis, TN and Alan Shores of Newark, DE; grandchildren, Bradley Shores (Toni), Eric Shores, Jason Buckner and Angela Moabad; and great grandchildren, Cam’ryn and Ryder Shores.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:30 am to 11:30 am on Tuesday morning, January 17, 2017 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, where a funeral service will be held at at 11:30 am. Interment will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear, DE.
