Donald R. McLaughlin
Mr. Donald R. McLaughlin, age 83, of Newark, DE, passed away on Wednesday, February 23, 2011.
Don was a native Delawarean, born in Wilmington on May 21, 1927, son of the late James McLaughlin and Jeanne Helen Brugger. A 1945 graduate of Newark High School, Don proudly served his country in the US Army Air Corps before returning to Delaware to earn his bachelors degree from the University of Delaware in 1951. He accepted a position with the DuPont Company where he worked for 34 years until his retirement from the finance department in 1985.
Active in his community, Don volunteered in the Master Gardener program from 1987 to 1994; at the Riverfront Arts Center from 1998 to 2001; and in the Prison Ministries program from 1988 to 2011. From 1951 to 1988, he was a leader in Boy Scout Troop #75, serving as Scout Master from 1953 to 1985. He led BSA expeditions to the Philmont Scout Ranch in 1961, 1965, and 1968, served on the district training team, earned his Wood Badge Beads, and was the recipient of the prestigious Silver Beaver award in 1968. Currently a member of Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church, he was a former member of Christiana U.M. Church and White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Violette Thomas. He is survived by his brother, William McLaughlin of Charlotte, NC; several nieces and nephews; and his good friends, the Olson Family: Ron and Carol Olson of Newark and Todd Olson and Jamie Sokol and their children.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:30 pm on Sunday, March 13th, at Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church, 1100 Church Road, Newark, DE, 19711. Interment will be held privately.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Don may be made to Head of Christiana Presbyterian Church at the address above or to a favorite charity.
