Doris M. (Hayden) Kester, age 91, of Newark, DE, passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2017.

Born and raised in South Wilmington, DE on June 23, 1926, she was a daughter of the late John W. and Madilyn (Alexander) Tunstall.

A devout Christian, Doris was a member of The Lighthouse A Baptist Church and Fairwinds Baptist Church. She enjoyed teaching kindergarten at First Baptist Academy. In her leisure time, Doris loved crafting, ceramics, shopping, and had traveled to 49 states. Most of all, she adored family gatherings.

In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Kester, who passed away in August 2013; children, Paul S. Hayden, Diane M. Hayden, and Ruth J. Hayden; brother, John W. Tunstall, who passed away in 2012; and her first husband, Elmer E. Hayden, who passed away in June 1988. She is survived by her sons, Gary Hayden (Joyce) of Lewes, DE and Ken Hayden (Lynn) of New Castle, DE; 9 grandchildren; and 23 great grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm on Friday evening, December 1, 2017 at The Lighthouse A Baptist Church, formerly Midway Baptist Church, 21265 John J. Williams Highway, Lewes, DE. A second visitation will be held from 8:30 am until 10:00 am on Saturday morning, December 2, 2017 at Fairwinds Baptist Church, 801 Seymour Road, Bear, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 10:00 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE 19720.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Building Program at The Lighthouse A Baptist Church at the address listed above.

  • To Hayden families sorry for the loss of your mother an grandmother I will cherish every memory I have with this beautiful woman She was more than a friend and she was like my grandmother to me. I will cherish the memories we had as you watch me grow up to be a woman gave me great advice in my life. And always remember she always bought me a box of salt water taffy when she went to the beach to visit Gary rest my sweet angel
