Dorothea M. Houghton
Mrs. Dorothea M. Kane Houghton, affectionately known as Dolly, age 82, of Wilmington, DE, died on Wednesday, July 13, 2011. A native Delawarean, Dolly was born on October 19, 1928, the youngest daughter of the late Harry C. Kane and Helena V. Nichols Kane.
Dolly was stricken with Polio as a teenager in 1944 and was paralyzed from the waist down. She was hospitalized at the Doris Memorial Wing of the Wilmington General Hospital where she underwent months of treatment and exhaustive physical therapy, including having to learn to walk again. As a result of the wonderful care she received during her illness, she was inspired to become a nurse so she could care for and help others. Dolly pursued her dream and graduated from the Wilmington General Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. She went on to work in several local hospitals and physicians offices as a registered nurse for almost 40 years until she retired. Dolly was pleased to offer a lifetime of service and was known for her bubbly personality and boisterous laugh.
Dolly is survived by her son, Mark, and his wife, Maria, of San Diego, CA, her daughter, Lisa Houghton, and grandchildren, Ashley Houghton and Zachary Houghton, all of Wilmington, as well as several nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her lifelong best friend, Esther Kelley, with whom she had shared not only nurses training, but an incredible friendship that endured years of laughter, tears, kids, and all that Life brought their way.
A committal service will be held at 1:30 pm on Friday, July 29, 2011, at All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the National Shrine of St. Jude, The Claretians, 205 W. Monroe St., Chicago, IL, 60606; or to St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
