Dorothy J. “Dottie” Greenley

August 3, 1940 - April 27, 2017

Dorothy J. Greenley, fondly known as Dottie, age 76, of New Castle, DE passed away after a long illness on April 27, 2017.

Born in Chestertown, MD on August 3, 1940, Dottie was a daughter of the late Howard and Velma (Welch) Johnson. She was a graduate of P.S. DuPont High School and earned degrees at Virginia Intermont and Emory and Henry University. Dottie taught for 35 years in the Colonial School District. She dedicated her life to helping children grow and flourish, until she retired in 2001. Dottie was passionate about making a difference in the lives of each of her students.

She loved spending time with her sons and especially her grandsons. Dottie enjoyed walks along the river in Old New Castle and spending summer days boating and swimming with family and close friends. Her enormous laugh, selfless attitude and friendly smile will be missed by all of those who knew her.

Dottie is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, George R. Greenley; sons, Scott (Terri) and Rob (Jackie) Greenley; beloved grandsons, Ryan, Tyler and Matthew; sister, Patricia Brinsfield; and nephew, Leonard.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Kutz Home for the wonderful care they provided to Dottie over the past 5 plus years. The family would also like to express their gratitude to Compassionate Hospice Service. The care and support they provided was so helpful to our family.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE from 10:00 am until 11:00 am followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am. Interment will be held privately in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 248 E. Chestnut Hill Rd., Suite 4, Newark, DE 19713.

  • Thoughts and prayers to Dottie’s family. We had been friends since age 3. I am relieved that she is now in a better place and her discomforts are gone.
