Born August 9, 1918

Dorothy Murray Burris, age 97, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 30, 2016.

She was born in Newark, DE on August 9, 1918, and lived there until 1948 when she married Vernon W. Burris, her husband of 58 years. Dorothy graduated from Newark High School, the Women’s College of the University of Delaware and attended Goldey College. She was employed for 18 years with the DuPont Company and worked in the Carother’s Laboratory at the Experimental Station during the early years of Nylon and Dacron manufacturing.

Dorothy was a life member of AAUW National and Wilmington, where she participated in many study groups. For 40 years, she belonged to the Gourmet Group and was also a charter member of the Crestmoor Swim Club, where she still enjoyed visiting the pool. Dorothy was a longtime member of Richardson Park United Methodist Church in Newport.

She and her husband enjoyed many trips by auto, touring all 48 contiguous states and across Canada from coast to coast, visiting National Parks, Presidential libraries, World Fairs and many other points of interest. They often took family members on their adventures and especially loved traveling to Wildwood, Virginia Beach, Myrtle Beach and the Florida beaches. Dorothy and her husband also participated in flea markets, most recently Singerly Fire Hall in Elkton, where they sold their home-grown vegetables and houseplants and delicious homemade breads. In her leisure time, she was an avid reader of political and medical text. Dorothy loved keeping in touch with recent and long-time friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon; parents, George W. and Gertrude (Fader) Murray; her brother, George W. Murray, Jr.; her sisters, Mary G. Murray and Janet M. Ivins; and a nephew, Eugene H. Scott. Dorothy is survived by her sister, Margery M. Kinnikin (John); nephews, George W. Murray III, David L. Murray and Richard C. Ivins; niece, Ann K. Parsons; niece in law, Bernice E. Scott; 9 great nieces and nephews; 12 great great nieces and nephews; and 1 great great great niece.

A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Monday afternoon, June 6, 2016, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 12 Noon until 1 pm. Interment will follow in Head of Christiana Cemetery, Nottingham Road, Newark, DE.
