E. Thomas Bailey

Born August 7, 1937

E. Thomas Bailey, age 77, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 11, 2015.

Born in Quincy, IL on August 7, 1937, Tom was the son of the late Edward Earl Bailey and Helen R. Rhodes Bailey. A lifelong learner, Tom received his B.S. from Illinois Wesleyan in Chemistry, his PhD in Chemistry from University of Illinois, and his MBA from the University of Chicago.

As a devout Christian, Tom was an active and longtime member of the Newark United Methodist Church. His days in life were full. His time at the church was filled with tending to the Bunting Library and working with displaced members of our community through the Empowerment Center. He enjoyed tutoring at need to children in math and science, and serving at the Hope Dining Room where he made friends with those who would frequent the dining room to serve or to catch a warm meal. His greatest joys were spending time with family and he adored being outside tending to his hedge row gardens, his flowers, and caring for the wildlife that flocked to his backyard.

Tom is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lois Strobel Bailey; son, Dr. E. David Bailey and his wife Kelly of Elkton, MD; daughter, Susan L. Bailey-Lang and her husband Todd of Forest Hill, MD; sister, Louise Robertson of Tucson, AZ; and 3 grandchildren, Allison, Aidan and Eric.

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Saturday afternoon, January 17, 2015, at the Newark United Methodist Church, 69 E. Main Street, Newark, Delaware 19711. Interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Tom’s name may be made to the Newark United Methodist Church, at the address listed above.

2 Condolences for E. Thomas Bailey

  • Lois, I am so sorry to read about Tom’s passing. Please give hugs to yourself, David and Susan from me. If I were closer than New Mexico, I’d deliver them personally.

  • I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I did not know your loved one personally, but I do know the pain of losing a loved one in death. It is my hope that you may find comfort from family and friends, and from “the God of all comfort” who can provide us with peace during such difficult times. – 2 Corinthians 1:3
