Edward Francis Maley
October 3, 1934 - November 18, 2016
As if choreographed by divine providence, Edward Maley’s (Coach Mal’s) induction into the University of Delaware Athletic Hall of Fame occurred just 21 days before his admittance to heaven on Friday, November 18, 2016, at the age of 82.
Mal found that football, Jamaica, Pittsburgh, and the Jersey/Delaware beaches let him start a conversation with anyone. He always had an anecdote about his childhood in Pittsburgh, his 35 years as a Fightin’ Blue Hen player and coach, Jimmy Buffett concerts, Caribbean trips and reggae music. He traveled to the islands so often that locals called him a Jamerican.
The true loves of his life were his wife Patsy, his children, Kris, Bill, and Kara, son-in-law Peter, daughter-in-law Meg, and granddaughters, Alex, Rachel and Anya. Mal’s impact extended well beyond his immediate family and the football field. His character, integrity, loyalty and kindness impacted and enriched so many lives. His moral compass never waivered: love your family, enjoy your life, embrace change and loss with grace and humor. Always generous with his open heart, his time and his home, he never expected anything in return.
Although Parkinson’s and pneumonia finally sidelined him, his love for his family and his sense of humor continued to shine. He asked that you remember him as a good husband, good parent, good grandparent, good coach, good people. With sparkling blue eyes, he continued to remind us that every little thing gonna be alright.
Mal/Coach/Dad/Uncle Ed/Gramps/Mr. Wonderful is so loved and dearly missed. Special thanks to Mal’s Millcroft family for their heartfelt care, the University of Delaware for a lifetime of memories and Christiana Care for their sensitive support at the end of his life.
In addition to his children, he is survived by his sister, Irene Gorski of Allison Park, PA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; parents, Stanley and Victoria (Janiec) Malinowski; stepfather, Marion Motkowski; and his brothers, Richard Maley and Narcy Maley.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am until 1 pm on Saturday, November 26, 2016 at the St. Thomas More Oratory, 45 Lovett Avenue, Newark, DE, where a memorial mass will be held at 1 pm. Interment will be held privately in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington, DE.

It’s been a long time since you three attended our wedding in Butler, PA, a long time since your Mom and I taught at Chrisana Salem, a long time since Bob played in the alumni band during one of Billy’s U of D games, a long time since Kara took my outdoor ed summer fun course, a long time since Pat and I worked on Chris’s high school graduation party! We all had fun with your Mom and Dad and Grandpa and Grandma….we have had a few glimpses of your life and just know that the memories just continued. Best of wishes from your Bethany Beach fans.

Loved getting to know Mal and Pat when Dan and I moved to Newark as newlyweds. We shared some good times at Christiana-Salem parties and UD events. So happy that Mal’s dedication and service to the University of Delaware was recognized by his induction into the Hall of Fame a few weeks ago and that he could be present. He was a wonderful man.
