Edward M. Hawthorne, Jr.

Mr. Edward M. Hawthorne, Jr., age 83, of Newark, DE, died on Sunday, August 1, 2010, at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, DE.

Born in Philadelphia, PA, on July 3, 1927, Mr. Hawthorne was a son of the late Edward Hawthorne, Sr. and Viola Van Allen Hawthorne. He proudly served his country in the Merchant Marine during World War II and would go on to a long career with Mobil Oil, where he retired in 1996 as a fire and safety supervisor.

Active in the fire service community for over 50 years, Mr. Hawthorne was a Life Member, past president, past vice president, and past assistant fire chief of Aetna Hose, Hook, & Ladder Fire Company. He was a member and past vice president of the New Castle County Fire Police and a lifetime instructor with the Delaware State Fire School. Additionally, he was a former member of the Chesapeake City, MD, volunteer fire department, where he was a past president, and the Minooka, IL, volunteer fire department, where he was a past fire chief. He shared his extensive technical firefighting experience in his book, Petroleum Liquids: Fire and Emergency Control.

Mr. Hawthorne was also a member of the Newark Lions Club for many years.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Elsie A. Breuer Hawthorne; children, Edward Hawthorne III (Kathy) of New Caney, TX; Nancy Wilson, Ph.D. (Gregg) of Middletown, DE; George Hawthorne (Daryl) of Leola, PA; Jeff Hawthorne of Joliet, IL; and Mike Hawthorne of Basel, Switzerland; brother, James Hawthorne of Tulia, TX; 8 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 5 pm to 7 pm on Thursday, August 5, 2010, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE, with a funeral service at 7 pm. A committal service will be held at 10 am on Friday, August 6, 2010, at the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
