Ella Jayne (Sheaffer) Hamilton

Ella Jayne (Sheaffer) Hamilton, age 89, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 18, 2016.

A native Delawarean, she was born in Newark on March 27, 1927, and was the daughter of the late C. Harold and Esther (Kurtz) Sheaffer. Mrs. Hamilton was a member of the Newark High School graduating class of 1945. She would later meet the love of her life, John V. Hamilton, with whom she shared 65 years of marriage. A talented homemaker, Mrs. Hamilton devoted her life to caring for her family.

She was a lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Newark. Active in her community, Mrs. Hamilton gave of her time and talents as a longtime volunteer for Meals on Wheels, the March of Dimes and the Right to Read Program. In her leisure time, Mrs. Hamilton enjoyed playing tennis and bridge. She was a beloved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great grandmother who will be greatly missed.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hamilton was preceded in death by her siblings, Doris Krages, H. Newton Sheaffer and Thomas E. Sheaffer. She is survived by her daughters, Gail Hamilton Poole of Grafton, MA and Lynn Hamilton Stubbs and her husband, John of Valrico, FL; brother, Robert Sheaffer of Newark, DE; grandchildren, James Poole, Jefferson Poole, Heather Baxter, John Stubbs, Katherine Stubbs and Anthony Stubbs; 6 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am to 11 am on Tuesday morning, October 25, 2016 at the First Presbyterian Church of Newark, 292 W. Main St., Newark, DE 19711, where a memorial service will follow at 11 am. Interment will be held privately in the Head of Christiana Cemetery, Newark, DE.
