Emilie Smelgus - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

Emilie Smelgus

Born April 26, 1931

Emilie Smelgus, known fondly as Amy, age 85, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 19, 2016.

From her birth in Pirmasens, Germany on April 26, 1931, until her passing, Amy touched everyone with her cheerful smile, contagious laugh, and beautiful voice which was usually singing or humming German songs. She married the love of her life, Carl Joseph Smelgus on November 19, 1955, and together, the couple shared 40 years, traveling the world with their family.

When she wasn’t nurturing or spending time with her children and grandchildren, she loved gardening, cooking, and baking. Amy led an exciting life that one could write a novel about and made hundreds of friends along the way. She was a member of the Delaware Saengerbund in Newark for many years. Anyone who knew Amy would agree that she was a talker. Her entertaining stories were always being shared, creating memories never to be forgotten.

In addition to her parents, Amy was preceded in death by her husband, Carl; son, Thomas Smelgus; and a brother, Adolf Zierl. She is survived by her children, Jim Smelgus (Cindy) of Smithfield, VA, John Smelgus of Thailand, Susan Vikari of Wilmington, DE and Karin Hahn (Peter) of Regensburg, Germany; siblings, Inge Bauer (Luke), Schorsch Zierl, Helmut Zierl (Martha) and Xavier Zierl (Helga) all of Germany; and grandchildren, Jennifer and Kerstin Vikari, Christopher and Carleigh Smelgus and Nina Ilnseher.

The family wishes to extend their deepest appreciation and gratitude to the staff of both Regal Heights Healthcare and Seasons Hospice of Delaware.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 am to 11:00 am on Saturday morning, October 29, 2016, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will be held at 11 am. Burial will be held privately in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Amy’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 399 Market Street, Ste. 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106.

  • I am saddened to hear of the passing of Mrs. Smelgus. She was a good friend of my Mother’s (Wally Alberer) and I have known her most of my childhood. She was such a dear person and I am sure is dancing away with her husband now that they are joined again. Prayers to the family of this wonderful person.
