Emma M. Powell, age 85, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully in the care of Seasons Hospice on Thursday, July 6, 2017.

Born in Hamorton, PA on February 17, 1932, Emma was the daughter of the late Fredrick and Ada Miller. Growing up, she had many fond memories of going to work with and attending Christmas parties with her father, who was the head gardener at Longwood Gardens when the DuPont family was still in residence. More recently, Emma enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels who visited the feeder that her daughter and longtime caregiver, Sharon, had put in her backyard.

She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Murphy and Beverly Reinholz and her husband, Jack; and granddaughters, Melissa Murphy, Megan Murphy, Sara Beach and her husband, Joe, and Laura Reinholz.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm on Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. Services and interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Emma’s memory may be made to Nemours/A.I. duPont Hospital for Children, “The Fund for Children’s Health”, Shands House, 1600 Rockland Road, Wilmington, DE 19803.

    Even though it has been a long time since I have seen my family I always enjoyed receiving cards at Christmas and my birthday.from Emma.

  • I was sad to hear of the passing of a favorite Aunt. Although we had not kept in touch over the years I remember her so fondly as such a quiet gentle person. My thoughts and prayers will be with the family on Tuesday. Nancy (Derickson) Haldeman.
