Esther M. Carman

Mrs. Esther M. Carman, age 89, of Wilmington, DE, formerly of Newark, DE, died on Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at Wilmington Hospital.


Mrs. Carman was born in Bolton, GA, on April 8, 1921, daughter of the late Walter Mayo and Lillie Lord Mayo. She was an honors graduate of the University of Delaware, and, in 1971 at the age of 50, would go on to earn her masters degree (also with honors) from UD. A gifted administrative and education professional, she made her career at the university, retiring as the Assistant to the Dean of the College of Education. She remained committed to high standards in education throughout her life and was a strong advocate of proper English grammar and usage.


A devout Christian, Mrs. Carman was a longtime member of Community of Christ Church in Wilmington. She was also a member of the Newark Senior Center, where she was active in the drama club and all of its productions. Her other notable affiliations included membership in the education honor society Kappa Delta Pi, the scholastic honor society Phi Kappa Phi, and the prestigious high IQ society, Mensa International.


Mrs. Carman was a talented needlework artist and delighted in creating lovely crochet and embroidery pieces as gifts for family and friends. Admired for her green thumb, she loved tending plants both in her home and in her garden. She particularly enjoyed bird watching and always kept full bird feeders around her home.


She is survived by her children, David Carman (Jeanne) of Elkton, MD, Melinda Carman (Larry) of Skiatook, OK, Michele Carman of Aurora, CO, John Carman (Marilee) of Lawson, MO, and Richard Carman (Rebecca) of North East, MD; stepsons, Mike Carman (Jeanne) of Winder, GA, and Harold Merritt (Juanita) of Pearland, TX; brother, Hubert Mayo (Ruth) of New Lebanon, OH; sister-in-law, Joyce Mayo of Windermere, FL; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Geraldine, and brothers, Lewis, Sydney, and Perry.


A memorial service will be held at 3 pm on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at Community of Christ Church, 1205 Milltown Road, Wilmington, where visitation will begin at 2 pm.
