Eugene Cornelius Dickerson, Jr.

Eugene Cornelius Dickerson Jr., 79, of Wilmington, Delaware passed away on Thursday February 27, 2014 after a long struggle with diabetes.

Eugene Gene Dickerson Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Lillie Bell and Eugene Cornelius Dickerson Sr. He had one half-sister at the time of his birth, Eleanor (Johnson). He grew up in Atlanta among over a dozen aunts and uncles with numerous cousins and other family.

He graduated from Booker T. Washington Jr. High School in 1951 and continued on to college to receive a Horticultural degree in 1955 from Tuskegee Institute in Alabama.

Eugene was married to Joan Jennifer Jones in 1955 and they had 6 children; Ghitana Aires, Eugene Cornelius III, Joan Jennifer, Ngyra Kelly, Djatamia and Frantz Ivan. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1970.

Gene remarried in 1976 to Thelma Lee who brought 3 sons, Wayne, Kevin Lee and Gregory Collins into his life from her previous marriage to Earl Glasco. They were married for 37 years.

Gene began his career in Delaware using his horticultural degree to gain employment at Styer’s Nursery.  He went on to become the Maintenance Supervisor for the Board of Parks in the city of Wilmington.  He later became a Policeman for the city. From there his career moved into social services. He worked several years as a counselor at Ferris Reformatory School for boys and finally served as an early intervention counselor working with elementary school students and their families to help them establish skills in making successful life choices.

In his free time Gene enjoyed studying the bible, listening to bible teachings and sharing the bible with friends and family alike. He had a lifelong mission of getting closer to God.

Eugene is survived by his 6 children, 3 step-sons, grandchildren, great grandchildren, as well as cousins, nieces, nephews and numerous other family and friends.

Eugene was preceded in death by his wife Thelma, who passed away on February 10, 2014 after a battle with cancer.  He was also preceded by his mother, father and half-sister, Eleanor Johnson.

His cremated remains will be returned to Atlanta Georgia, his place of birth.

  • Mr. Eugene will surely be missed. I have always had fine memories of him growing up. I remember when my mom would allow me to walk Ngyra over to his house when that wasn’t allowed. He was always kind to me. There were a few times as I was older that I even visited him on my own. He was a good man and friend. Rest in Peace.
