Eugene Michael Poppitt, Sr.

Born May 27, 1951

Eugene Michael Poppitt, Sr., age 65, of Lincoln, DE, passed away quietly on Saturday, March 11, 2017.

A native Delawarean, Gene was born in Wilmington on May 27, 1951 and was the youngest of three children of the late Julius and Jean (Carello) Poppitt. He proudly served his country as a member of the Delaware Air National Guard in New Castle from 1970 until 2000. After retirement, Gene went on to pursue many opportunities. He and his wife, Dora, eventually settled in Sussex County where together, they built Cedar Creek General Store. Gene and Dora not only built a business and a brand, they built a new chapter in their life with blood, sweat, some tears and most importantly “ love.

In his leisure time, Gene loved to fish and those closest to him will remember the adventures and perhaps some embellished tales. He was a respected man with friends from all walks of life. Gene will be fondly remembered as the life of the party, an amazing storyteller, dedicated family man, and as a fierce and loyal friend.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his older sister, Angeline M. Rees. The two had a close bond and were warriors sharing the same disease.

Gene is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Dora M. (Brown) Poppitt; brother, Julius (Jules) Poppitt; daughter, Jennifer G. Torrey; sons, Eugene (Geno) Michael Poppitt, Jr., Timothy Evan Poppitt and Jason A. Brown; 8 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A committal service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday afternoon, March 16, 2017, in the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery.

  • I was so sad to hear that Gene had passed. I will never forget how he helped me learn how to cast my fishing line down at the pond. I had gone in the shop for one of their delicious subs and asked his advice on the best bait to fish with, and when he realized I was a newbie to fishing he came out to the pond and showed me the ropes! He was always very kind and friendly.
