Eugene Thomas “Tom” Downward, Jr., age 54, of Townsend, DE, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, July 10, 2018.

Born in Wilmington, DE on December 3, 1963, he was the son of Eugene Thomas and Grace (Austin) Downward, Sr. Tom attended William Penn High School, Hodgson Vo-Tech High School co-op program and graduated from James H. Groves. He worked for more than 35 years as a truck driver and diesel mechanic, most recently with Evergreen Waste Services. Recognized for his talents, Tom received various awards and certifications throughout his career.

Tom loved visiting the beach with family and friends, where he enjoyed his favorite food, crabs. He will always be remembered as a loving son, brother, father, grandfather and dear friend to many.

Tom was preceded in death by his daughter, Diane Ashley Downward; and brother-in-law, Benjamin F. Shahan. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer L. Andes (George Baize); sisters, Jean Marie Shahan, Debroah Lynn Fowler (Michael) and Terry Anne Speaks (Rick); grandchildren, Joshlyn Diane Andes, Joshua Thomas Andes, Sadie Lee Fawn Baize and Jenne Mae Fawn Baize; longtime friend, Margaret Ennis; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:30 am until 11 am on Friday, July 20, 2018, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 11 am. Interment will be held privately in Gracelawn Memorial Park.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. I remember when we met Tom. There were no seats at the church picnic and his entire family welcomed us to sit with them. Through out the dinner Tom told jokes and made us laugh. We were really looking forward to getting to know him. RIP
