Frances Ann Stapleford
Frances Ann Stapleford, age 72, of St. Georges, DE, died Sunday, January 23, 2011, at the Christiana Hospital in Newark after a brief battle with lung cancer. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends.
Fran was one of five children born to Anna and Earl Emerson of Middletown. She was a 1957 graduate of Middletown High School, where she was honored as class salutatorian. During her school years, she was active in field hockey, basketball, and cheerleading, and had also been elected as homecoming queen and as the secretary of her class. Soon after graduation, she married her high school sweetheart, Charles E. Stapleford, Jr., and they would go on to raise four children.
Fran was a very loving, active homemaker for many years, volunteering and leading the PTA organizations for her childrens schools. In 1978, she began working in the family business, Staplefords Chevrolet and Oldsmobile, where she continued to work until her death.
Fran was actively involved in the St. Georges Methodist Church and the St. Georges Historical Society, where she was instrumental in restoring the St. Georges Presbyterian Church. Above all else, she enjoyed the beach, dancing with her husband of almost 50 years, taking long road trips on the classic Harley Davidson motorcycle, and spending time with her children and grandchildren, who always made her face light up with joy. Her strength, cheerfulness, bright smile and never-ending caring for others will be greatly missed.
Fran is survived by her beloved husband, Charles; her children and their spouses, Sharon and Michael Forge, Dawn and James Emmons, Michelle Stapleford and Joseph Casarino, and Charles and Shawni Stapleford; her grandchildren, Lex and Brynn Forge and Jessica and Connor Emmons; her mother Anna Emerson; and her siblings and their spouses, Earl Emerson, Jr., Joan and Floyd Burris, Phyllis and James Waecker, and Linda and Clarence Adams. She was preceded in death by her father, Earl Emerson, Sr., her sister-in-law, Nancy Emerson, and her mother- and father-in-law, Alice and Charles Stapleford, Sr.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, January 27th, at the St. Georges Historical Society, 200 N. Main Street, St. Georges, where visitation will begin at 10 am. The Reverend Vernon Bryant will officiate. Burial at St. Georges Cemetery will follow the funeral service, with friends and family invited to the St. Georges United Methodist Church immediately thereafter for refreshments and a celebration of Frans life.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Frans memory may be made to the St. Georges Historical Society, P.O. Box 267, St. Georges, DE 19733.
The family urges all to be vigilant about cancer screening. Fran, a non-smoker, did not have a chance to fight this devastating disease.
