Frederick G. Hewett
Mr. Frederick G. Hewett, age 88, of Wilmington, DE, died peacefully at home on Thursday, March 17, 2011, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on November 16, 1922, in Wilmington, DE to the late Thomas F. and Ethel J. Hewett Sr., Fred was a graduate of Wilmington High School. He then joined the US Army Air Corps, and was stationed with the 364th Bombardment Squadron where he served as a communications operator during WWII. Fred bravely flew on the B-17 Liberty Run, and because of his distinguished service, earned the Distinguished Unit Badge, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal, with the highest possible grade of corporal. After being honorably discharged on October 14, 1945, he went on to work for the Pennsylvania Railroad, retiring after 42 years of dedicated service.
Fred served as president of the First Wilmington Motorcycle Club and enjoyed riding his Harley. He was a proud lifetime member of the Lt. J. Allison O’Daniel Post #475 in Newark, where he served on the honor guard for many years. A skilled handyman, Fred loved to “tinker”, and if his children broke it, he fixed it. He was an avid Phillies, Eagles, and NASCAR fan. Above all, Fred was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed.
Fred was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Claire R. McEvoy Hewett. Left to cherish his memory are 3 daughters, Denice McEvoy, and partner, Doreen Bishop, Patty Richardson and husband, Bob, and Rita Thomas, and husband, Rob; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held from 6 to 8 pm on Wednesday, March 23, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. A committal service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, March 24, in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
