Gene L. Hauer
Mr. Gene L. Hauer, age 79, of Elkton, MD, died on Friday, November 26, 2010 at his home.
Born in York County, PA, on October 28, 1931, son of the late Thurlow and Viola (Spangler) Hauer, he was a 1949 graduate of William Penn Senior High School, York, PA. After working in industry for two years, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 and worked as a dental technician for four years at U.S. Naval Training Center, Bainbridge, MD, during the Korean Conflict. Upon completion of his service, he attended the Pennsylvania State University, graduating in 1959, having earned his degree in Industrial Psychology.
He worked in Personnel Management for the American Viscose Corporation in Parkersburg, WV until transferred to Avisun Corporation, New Castle, DE, in 1961. ln 1977 he transferred to Standard Oil of Indiana, Chicago, lL. After one and a half years he accepted a promotion in Personnel Management with Amoco Container Corporation, Atlanta, GA. Three years later, in 1981, he returned to Chicago until his retirement from Amoco Corporation in 1987, at which time he returned to Delaware, ultimately becoming a resident of Elkton, MD.
A long-time member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Newark, DE, Gene served on the Church Property Committee as well as ushering for Sunday services. He was instrumental in coordinating the installation of the J.W. Walker Pipe Organ in December of 2001. Mr. Hauer was also active in the Del Mar Va Council of Boy Scouts of America, Troop 252.
A dedicated Mason throughout his life, he was a member of Hiram Lodge #25 A.F. and A.M. in Newark, DE and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite (Valley of Wilmington).
Gene is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Vivian M. (Updegraff) Hauer; daughter Elizabeth A. (Hauer) Baker of Newark, DE; son Steven M. Hauer and wife Laurilei R. of Naples, FL; daughter Katharine J. (Hauer) Fullerton and husband David J. Fullerton of Smyrna, DE; sister Shirley (Hauer) Smith of Dover, PA; sister JoAnne (Hauer) Knott and husband Gary Knott of York, PA; grandsons Corey J. Last and wife Kristin, and Jesse N. Last; granddaughters Sarah A. and Hope E. Hammond; great grandson Bretton J. Last; stepgrandchildren Matthew Paoli, Tanya Paoli and Dylan Tucker; as well as nieces and nephews and step great grandchildren, all of whom will remember him fondly. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Steven M. Hauer II.
A Masonic service will be held on Thursday, December 2nd, at 11 am followed by a memorial service at 11:15 am at St. Pauls Lutheran Church, 701 S. College Ave., Newark, DE 19713. Family and friends are invited to gather for a reception in the church fellowship hall immediately following placement of cremains in the St. Pauls Lutheran Church Memorial Garden.
