George Earl Johnson
Born June 1, 1942
George Earl Johnson, age 74, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 from complications of Lewy Body Dementia.
A native Delawarean, George was born in Wilmington on June 1, 1942, and was the son of the late George W. and Madge (Cecil) Johnson. He proudly served aboard the USS Randolph in the U.S. Navy during the invasion of the Cuban Bay of Pigs. George made his career with Diamond State/Bell Atlantic/Verizon where he worked until his retirement.
A man of deep faith, he taught Sunday school as a young adult at the Salem United Methodist Church. When his daughter’s were young, George, along with his wife, Lydia, led the Good News Clubs in their neighborhood. He gave of his time and talents throughout his life as a volunteer with a number of organizations including the United Way, as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army, as a bowling and track coach for Special Olympics, and by serving as a Scout Master for a Boy Scout Troop for children with disabilities. In his leisure time, George enjoyed annual family vacations in Lewes Beach, singing and playing the guitar. He had a warm and endearing personality and loved nothing more then making people laugh. A beloved husband, father, nephew, grandfather and friend, George will be very dearly missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister. George is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lydia Esther (Wilson) Johnson; children, Melissa McVey (R. Scott), Cecily Luevano (Anthony) and Forrest Wilson; aunt, Ida Mae Stidham; granddaughter, Jemma Lynn Luevano; nieces, Wendy W. Kinard and Traci R. Wilson; and brother-in-law, R. Rodney Wilson, Jr.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 1:30 pm until 2 pm on Monday, April 3, 2017 at the Salem United Methodist Church, 469 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 2 pm. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Compassionate Care Hospice, 248 E. Chestnut Hill Rd., Suite 4, Newark, DE 19713.

We both have such good memories of George.He made us laugh, he was sooo good to the daycare kids. Many a grown up , grew up at Lydias……and Mr. George , they called him was always there; and smiling. I’m so sorry to hear about Mr. Johnson’s passing. I had the opportunity to work with him during his time at New castle HRC as one of his therapists. He was always a pleasure to work with, and he was such a hard worker! George never complained about a thing, and he was so kind to others. I would try my best to look out for him, made sure he got double portions for his meals and extra snacks (because he could eat!) He was a great person and will surely be missed. May you find comfort from your cherished memories, and indeed from the “God of all comfort” who provides support during these difficult times. -2 Corinthians 1:3
