George Floyd Lancaster

Born April 2, 1941

George Floyd Lancaster, known affectionately as Poor George, age 73, of Port Penn, DE, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, May 27, 2014.

Born in Middleneck, MD on April 2, 1941, George was the son of the late Floyd W. Lancaster and Louise Downs Lancaster. He made his career as an assistant manager with A&P and retired in 1987 after 30 years of dedicated service.

Active in his community, George was a longtime member of the Port Penn Volunteer Fire Company and VFW Post No. 838. He was an avid dancer, and especially liked country line dancing with his favorite dance partner and beloved wife, Susan and their many friends. George jokingly referred to himself as a handyman extraordinaire and took great pride in cutting and splitting the firewood he used to heat his home throughout the years. He will be remembered as one of a kind, who appreciated the simple things in life, like enjoying a cold beer and spending time with his family and friends. George will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Susan A. Cawthray Lancaster; children, Michael G. Lancaster and wife Susan of Defuniak Springs, FL, Kellie A. Newman and husband Theo of Felton, DE and Amy S. Trowbridge of Port Penn, DE; sister, Sherrie A. Stanley of Cheswold, DE; 6 grandchildren, Suzie, Cassy, Carrie, Jordan, Kyle and Howard; and 3 great grandchildren, Brianna, Austin and Colton.

A visitation will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Saturday morning, May 31, 2014 at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 214 Clinton Street, Delaware City, DE. A committal service will follow at the Crumpton Cemetery, 2010 Dudley’s Corner Road, Crumpton, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in George’s name may be made to Delaware Hospice, 16 Polly Drummond Center, Second Floor, Newark, DE 19711 or to the Crumpton United Methodist Church, PO Box 187, Millington, MD 21651 or to the Port Penn Volunteer Fire Co., 26 W. Market St., Port Penn, DE 19731.

  • My main man George!! You have been the father-in-law every son could ever hope to have in their lifetime. Your “tell it like it is” and “enjoy life while you can” attitude have given me a better understanding of dealing with my own reality. You raised some good kids and I’d like to thank you for giving Kellie some of the talents that are only passed on through the grapevine. Your marvelous use of the English language, and your ability to bring others into a “known close” feeling without the touchie, feelie aspects being there. Your natural ability to be able to fix anything once you studied it “whilst biting your tongue” have been totally amazing. Your patience with those of us who chose not to do it “Pops way” will always help me remember that with “Your way” comes conclusions that have already been thought out and studied. You will be sorely missed and thought of often. I will be listening for you in the woods, and look forward to “seeing you on the other side”!! I love you man, Theo

  • The world has lost a warm, funny and straight forward guy. George, Susie and the kids were a very big part of my life at one time growing up. You are going to be sadly missed. My heartfelt prayers are with you Susie, as well as Kellie, Amy and Michael and the rest of the family. God bless you all.

    Chris

  • What does one say at a time like this. I have known George my whole life. He was one of the kindest, gentlest, funniest, practical joke playing people I ever knew, and how he and Sue seemed to have made for each other. I would always get tickled at him when he was intense into something and chew his tongue. His Dad did the same thing. Rest in peace George, you will sorely be missed, we will all be together someday.
    Love
    Bonnie

  • RIP Mr. Lancaster. You will truly be missed. Keep on dancing.

  • One thing we could always be assured of with George around was a smile and quiet orneriness until the music started! Rarely do you find one who could do it all with such enjoyment! Though Sue was your favorite partner you shared your talents with many. You brought much joy to Aunt Charlotte when you and Charlotte Ann wheelchair danced with her! Though we didn’t see each other often, it always seemed like it had been yesterday. Say Hi to all our family members and don’t throw away the dancing shoes. Thanks for your community service and rest in peace. We’ll miss you!

  • OMG look out Heaven…Gene and George in the same place scary just thinking about it..I cant even think of just 1 of the good times we have had so many..Remembering the time you put Gene on the floor of the Chevelle we had by going around a curve on 2 wheels..the cook outs ,fishing trips, you using the chain saw to help Gene cut 2 by 4’s on the front porch we were building…just so many good times we have had in the 40 plus years we have known each other..I can still hear you saying that Hubert had a good head on his shoulders after talking politics for about 3 hours….you will be missed my dear dear friend by many….Love you George

  • I am not a man of a lot of words.
George was my best friend. At times he was my father,my brother, my son and adviser.
If we could write a book of our experiences together it may be very close to be X rated.
I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU as long as I live

  • Dear families,
So very sorry to read of George’s passing. My husband and George worked
together at the A&P many moons ago. He was a fine person then and
obviously has remained so over the years. Good family man.
May God be with you and give you comfort, strength and peace of mind
in the difficult days ahead. I lost my husband in 2010 to cancer also.
God Bless you, it is not easy and I still miss him so.
    In Christ’s love,
    Barbara B. Gruwell

  • A kindred dance spirit! And one of the most sincerely caring and helpful people I have known. Coming to Delaware will not be the same for me without my dance partner!

  • So sorry to learn of George’s passing. He was such an exceptional dancer and a joy to watch him.
It seemed he never gave up hope with his devastating illness and that is a tribute to his faith.
We are sure he can teach those angels a step or two….

God bless and keep all of you in His loving care.

    In Christian love.

  • George was a big part of my life through his dear friendship with my father. The man sure knew how to make a person smile! I will always treasure the memories of mountain climbing, penny poker and a one of a kind happy hour full of laughter and gems of “wisdom”. • Pop, you were truly a one of a kind person. I have always had the upmost respect and admiration for you. You were more than just a father in law to me, you were a mentor and most of all a true friend. May you rest easy and in peace. I will cherish the memories I have. Till we meet again, god speed.

  • Words cannot express the sadness that I feel that George has passed. Even though I have lived away from Delaware, George always managed to touch my life. I would always see him at dad’s house, when I would arrive home for a visit, enjoying “Happy Hour”. My remembrance is a “Hi Baby” and a warm hug. George has been the only other adult male figure in my life at home in Delaware. His embraces were unconditional. He would always ask me with genuine interest and concern about my world and life in Connecticut and if I was doing okay. I feel your family’s sadness and feel the sadness of my dad, for I know he has lost his best friend. George will be forever remembered in my heart.

  • Dear George,

How do you say goodbye to someone who has been your special friend since first grade and your brother’s best friend since high school? I will miss your contagious smile, your positive attitude toward life and your good natured soul. Dick & I will miss seeing you at Happy Hour and at crab parties at Pete’s. We will also miss having you and Sue stay at our house on your way to visit your Massachusetts relatives. But most of all, I will miss my favorite jitterbug partner! I’m so grateful for the opportunity to relive our teenage years through the rock and roll music of the 50’s at Sam’s and at Millington.

Dick and I both admired and respected the grace and dignity with which you handled the past few months. You will be sorely missed but never forgotten!

    Love,
    Dick and Alice

  • Sue and family,
I was so sorry to hear about George. Although we did not see a lot of each other, I always
was very fond of George. He was always teasing and made you feel at home. I enjoyed
watching him dance at your anniversary party and the way he totally enjoyed that day.
He will be missed by anyone who knew him. It was also good to Michael after so many years.

    Charlotte Anne

  • Amy and the rest of the family, I am so sorry to hear about George. I will never forget when he taught me to two-step at the VFW. RIP.
