George Frederick Jahn
On Wednesday, March 16, 2011, George Frederick Jahn (Fred) of Middletown, DE, passed to the heavens peacefully with his family surrounding and comforting him. Fred was born July 6, 1925 in Pleasantville, NJ, to Carla and George Jahn.
Fred was a graduate of Pleasantville High School and later graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, with a degree in chemical engineering. He first worked as a co-op student at the Portland Cement Company near Evanston, where he met his bride of nearly 60 years, Marguerite G. Small (Peggy).
In 1950, Fred began his career with the DuPont Company in Wilmington, DE, and worked with several teams of engineers at the Louviers site, occasionally traveling abroad to consult about the design of other plant sites. After 35 years with the company, he and his wife retired to Steep Falls, ME. Fred was active in his local community, for several years volunteering as a legal aide with a law firm helping those less fortunate. While living in Maine for nearly ten years, he also served as president of the Maine Orchid Society.
In 1992, Fred and Peggy moved back to Delaware to be closer to family. Always vivacious and energetic, he was an avid outdoorsman and passionate about gardening. He was also an avid golf and tennis player and for many years a member of the DuPont Country Club. During his life in the Middletown area, he remained active and supported his community and environmental groups. Fred donated countless hours delivering Meals on Wheels to elderly people in the area.
As an active wildlife supporter and strong environmentalist, he managed the Bluebird Trail Program at the DuPont Country Club as well as at Deerfield Country Club. He was an active member of the Sierra Club, Audubon, Wilderness Society, and many more. Fred also made time to build bluebird boxes for the DE Audubon group. He passed along his love and respect of the outdoors to his family, taking them on camping excursions each summer to such places as Yellowstone National Park, the Tetons, Rocky Mountains, Western Canada and New England.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Jahn; brother, Robert Jahn of Ottawa, Canada; brother-in-law, Raymond Small of Winter Park, FL; daughters, Barbara McCauley and husband, Charlie, of Newark DE, Susan Lester and husband, David, of Elkton, MD, and Cathy Mills and husband, Steve, of Bear, DE; five grandchildren, Betsy Fallon of Geneva, IL, Brandon Lester of Columbia, MD, Christin and Sheri Mills of Bear, DE, and Natalie Lester of Baltimore, MD. Fred will be dearly missed by all his family and friends.
