Mr. George W. Johnson, age 96, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 10, 2011 at the Compassionate Care Hospice Unit located within St. Francis Hospital.


Born on October 26, 1914, in Newark, DE, Mr. Johnson was the son of the late George C. Johnson and Edna Faulkner Johnson. He was employed as a Field Repair Specialist for the Haveg Company, retiring after a long career with the firm. Always a tireless worker, Mr. Johnson was also responsible for assisting with the building of Delaware Park, where he hauled bags of cement on his back from the flatbed trains to the construction site.


Mr. Johnson was a very active member of the Salem United Methodist Church, and spent many hours giving of his time and talents there. He served as the Sunday school superintendent, helped organize and run the popular ham and oyster fundraiser, and was responsible for folding and disbursing the churchs bulletins. In his rare leisure time, he enjoyed muskrat hunting with his brother-in-law, Lou, and gardening. Mr. Johnson was also a talented woodworker, and especially liked making whirlybirds. He was an avid lover of animals.


In addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was predeceased by his daughter, Edna Mae Johnson and his brothers, Fred and Paul Johnson. He is survived by his beloved wife of 71 years, Madge A. (Cecil) Johnson, of Newark, DE; son, George E. Johnson, and wife, Lydia of Newark, DE; granddaughters, Melissa L. McVey, and husband, R. Scott and Cecily A. Luevano, and husband, Anthony, all of Newark, DE; and grandson, Forrest Wilson of Newark, DE.


A funeral service will be held at 12 Noon, on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at the Salem United Methodist Church, 469 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE, where family and friends may call from 10:30 am until 12 Noon. Interment will follow at White Clay Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 15 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark, DE.


In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Salem United Methodist Church at the address listed above.
